Full explanation

US Core CPI YoY measures how much consumer prices have changed over the previous 12 months after excluding food and energy. It is based on the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), which tracks prices paid by urban consumers for a broad basket of goods and services. Food and energy are omitted because their prices can move sharply from month to month, making the measure a commonly watched gauge of underlying inflation. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it in its monthly CPI release.

Why traders watch it

It is a major US inflation measure that can affect expectations for Federal Reserve policy, Treasury yields and USD pricing.

Market interpretation

USD
Can prompt repricing of expectations for US inflation and Federal Reserve policy.
US Treasury yields
Can affect expected policy rates and inflation-related yield movements.
US equity index futures
Can influence discount-rate expectations and broader risk sentiment.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A result above expectations may be interpreted as evidence of firmer underlying inflation pressure, while a result below expectations may be interpreted as softer pressure. Reactions can also depend on the headline CPI, the monthly core reading, shelter and services components, revisions, and the wider policy outlook.

Stronger than expected

A higher-than-expected reading may be viewed as firmer underlying inflation pressure.

Weaker than expected

A lower-than-expected reading may be viewed as softer underlying inflation pressure.

In line with expectations

Compare the annual core CPI reading with consensus expectations, the prior release and the monthly core CPI change.

Typical volatility

High. Core CPI excludes food and energy, so it is not a complete measure of changes in households' living costs. A single release can also be influenced by category-specific price movements and base effects.

Trading considerations

  • Check both the year-on-year and month-on-month core CPI readings, as they describe inflation over different horizons.
  • Compare core CPI with headline CPI and major components such as shelter and services.
  • Expect liquidity conditions and spreads to change around the scheduled release time.
  • Consider the release alongside Federal Reserve communications and subsequent inflation indicators.
  • Watch for methodological notes, seasonal adjustment details and revisions where applicable.
