UK Core CPI (YoY)
Published:
12-month change in UK consumer prices excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, published by the ONS.
Full explanation
UK Core CPI (YoY) is the 12-month percentage change in the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Consumer Prices Index excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco. It is not seasonally adjusted. It is a core measure and differs from headline CPI, from CPIH, and from the Retail Prices Index (RPI) and its variants.
Why traders watch it
The Bank of England watches core inflation as a guide to persistent price pressure, so surprises can move sterling and gilt yields.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected reading points to stronger underlying inflation and can raise expectations of tighter Bank of England policy; a lower reading points the other way.
A higher reading means underlying UK inflation rose faster.
A lower reading means it rose more slowly.
Higher means firmer core inflation; lower means softer.
