S&P Global/CIPS UK Composite PMI
Published:
A monthly survey indicator that combines UK manufacturing and services activity into a single view of private-sector output.
Full explanation
The S&P Global/CIPS UK Composite PMI is a monthly survey-based measure of business activity across the United Kingdom's private sector. It combines manufacturing output and services business activity into one index. A reading above 50 indicates that activity is generally expanding from the previous month, while a reading below 50 indicates contraction. S&P Global publishes an early flash estimate and a later final reading, which can revise the initial estimate.
Why traders watch it
It provides an early, broad indication of UK economic momentum and can influence expectations for Bank of England policy, sterling and UK interest rates.
Market interpretation
- GBP
- A surprise in the activity reading can affect expectations for UK growth and Bank of England policy.
- UK government bonds
- The release can influence interest-rate expectations, particularly when activity and price components move together.
- UK equity indices
- It can alter sentiment toward domestically focused sectors and the wider growth outlook.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A result above expectations or a move further above 50 may be interpreted as a sign of firmer private-sector activity, while a weaker-than-expected result or a move below 50 may point to softer activity. Market reaction can also depend on price, employment and forward-looking components in the accompanying report.
A higher reading, especially one above 50 or above expectations, may suggest faster or broader private-sector expansion.
A lower reading, especially one below 50 or below expectations, may suggest slower activity or contraction.
Above 50 indicates expansion; below 50 indicates contraction.
Typical volatility
Moderate. The index is a diffusion measure rather than a direct estimate of output growth. Flash and final readings are distinct publication stages, and the final figure may differ from the initial estimate.
Trading considerations
- Check whether the calendar entry is the flash estimate or the final release; they are separate stages of the same monthly survey.
- Compare the composite result with the manufacturing and services components, as one sector can drive the headline move.
- Review the report's output-price, input-cost, employment and new-orders measures for additional context.
- Allow for revisions between the flash and final readings, and compare the result with the market consensus and prior value.
