Full explanation

Switzerland Official Reserve Assets is the Swiss National Bank's broad official reserve-assets total ("A. Official reserve assets" in the SNB's reserve-assets data). It includes foreign currency reserves, gold (including gold deposits and swaps), Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), Switzerland's IMF reserve position and other official reserve assets where applicable. It is a level at the end of the reference month, not a change. The SNB reports it in CHF millions; calendars may show it in billions. It is published monthly, roughly one month after the reference month, and is not seasonally adjusted. It is broader than the SNB's foreign currency reserves figure, which excludes gold, SDRs and the IMF position.

Why traders watch it

Swiss reserves are closely watched because they reflect the SNB's past foreign-exchange interventions against franc strength, as well as valuation effects from exchange rates, bond prices and gold.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A rise can reflect foreign-currency purchases by the SNB, higher gold prices or valuation gains from a weaker franc; a fall can reflect sales or valuation losses. Because valuation effects are large, a change in the total does not by itself prove intervention.

Stronger than expected

A higher total means the SNB's official reserve holdings, including gold, rose in Swiss-franc terms.

Weaker than expected

A lower total means official reserve holdings fell in Swiss-franc terms.

In line with expectations

Higher means larger official reserves; lower means smaller reserves, whether from transactions or valuation.

Typical volatility

Low. The figure is a month-end level published with a lag. Gold and exchange-rate valuation changes can dominate monthly moves. Do not compare it directly with the narrower foreign-currency-reserves figure.

Trading considerations

  • Separate possible intervention from gold and currency valuation effects.
  • Compare with the SNB's quarterly intervention disclosures.
  • Remember the figure is a month-end level released with a lag.
