Spanish Consumer Confidence
Published:
A monthly CIS survey that tracks how Spanish households assess current and expected economic and financial conditions.
Full explanation
Spanish Consumer Confidence is a monthly survey-based index of how households in Spain view their financial position and the wider economy. It is intended to help track conditions relevant to private consumption. The index asks about the recent and expected economic situation of households and Spain, employment conditions, inflation, interest rates, saving and purchases of durable goods. It is compiled and published by Spain's Centre for Sociological Research (CIS).
Why traders watch it
Consumer confidence can provide an early indication of household spending conditions, which feed into Spain's growth and inflation outlook. Surprises may influence views on the Spanish economy and, more broadly, euro-area interest-rate expectations.
Market interpretation
- EUR and euro-area FX markets
- A material surprise can draw attention when it changes perceptions of Spanish and euro-area household demand.
- European government bonds and interest-rate markets
- The result may contribute to changing expectations for growth, inflation and monetary policy, particularly when supported by other data.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected reading may be consistent with households feeling more positive about economic and financial conditions and less cautious about spending. A lower-than-expected reading may suggest weaker sentiment and more restrained household demand expectations.
A higher reading may indicate that households are becoming more positive about economic conditions, finances or spending-related decisions.
A lower reading may indicate more cautious household sentiment and weaker expectations for economic or financial conditions.
Higher readings may point to firmer household sentiment; lower readings may point to greater caution.
Typical volatility
Moderate. This is a sentiment survey rather than a direct measure of consumer spending. Survey results can be volatile, may diverge from realised consumption, and should be assessed alongside retail-sales, labour-market and inflation data.
Trading considerations
- Compare the result with the prior reading and market consensus, where available.
- Review whether the change is driven by views of current conditions or future expectations.
- Check related indicators such as retail sales, inflation and employment data before drawing broader conclusions.
- Allow for potentially thinner liquidity and wider spreads around scheduled economic releases.
