Full explanation

Spain CPI (YoY) is the annual percentage change in Spain's national Consumer Price Index (Índice de Precios de Consumo, IPC), published by the National Statistics Institute (INE). It is not seasonally adjusted. It is the national CPI, not the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (IPCA/HICP), which INE publishes alongside and which can differ. INE publishes an advance (flash) indicator at the end of the reference month and the final figure in the middle of the following month; the calendar shows both under this name.

Why traders watch it

Spain is the fourth-largest euro-area economy, and its flash release is one of the first national inflation readings each month.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected reading points to stronger price pressure and can lift expectations of tighter monetary policy; a lower reading points the other way.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading means Spanish consumer prices rose faster over the past year.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading means they rose more slowly.

In line with expectations

Higher means faster Spanish inflation; lower means slower.

Typical volatility

medium. Advance and final releases share this name. Do not compare the national IPC with the harmonised IPCA.

Trading considerations

  • Distinguish national IPC from harmonised IPCA.
  • Compare advance with final.
