Spain Core CPI (YoY)
Published:
A measure of Spain's annual underlying consumer inflation that excludes unprocessed food and energy products.
Full explanation
Spain Core CPI (YoY) measures the annual change in consumer prices excluding unprocessed food and energy products. It is intended to show underlying inflation by reducing the direct influence of components that can move sharply from month to month. Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) calculates it within the monthly Consumer Price Index framework, which tracks prices of goods and services purchased by resident households. The October 14 release is the detailed CPI publication following the earlier flash estimate for the same reference month.
Why traders watch it
The reading helps markets assess domestic inflation persistence in Spain and may affect expectations for euro-area inflation and European Central Bank policy.
Market interpretation
- EUR foreign-exchange markets
- Surprises can influence expectations for euro-area inflation and the future policy path of the European Central Bank.
- European interest-rate markets
- The result can affect pricing of inflation persistence and interest-rate expectations, particularly when it differs from the earlier flash estimate.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected result may be viewed as evidence of firmer underlying price pressures and could increase attention to tighter monetary-policy expectations. A lower-than-expected result may suggest softer underlying inflation pressure and could have the opposite effect on those expectations.
A higher reading than expected may indicate stronger underlying inflation pressure than markets had anticipated.
A lower reading than expected may indicate softer underlying inflation pressure than markets had anticipated.
Higher-than-expected core CPI may point to firmer underlying inflation; lower-than-expected core CPI may point to softer underlying inflation.
Typical volatility
Moderate. Core CPI is not the same as headline CPI or core HICP. The final CPI release can confirm or revise the earlier flash estimate, and Spain-specific inflation data are only one input into euro-area policy expectations.
Trading considerations
- Check whether the result confirms or revises Spain's earlier CPI flash estimate.
- Distinguish the national core CPI measure from headline CPI and core HICP.
- Compare the release with other major euro-area inflation data and ECB communications.
- Liquidity and spreads can change around scheduled inflation releases, especially alongside other European data.
