S&P Global/CIPS Flash UK Services PMI
Published:
An early monthly survey reading of business activity in the UK services sector.
Full explanation
The S&P Global/CIPS Flash UK Services PMI is an early monthly survey-based measure of business activity in the United Kingdom's services sector. It asks service-sector firms whether activity has increased, decreased or stayed unchanged from the previous month, then converts the responses into an index. A reading above 50 indicates that activity is expanding overall, while one below 50 indicates contraction. The flash release is a preliminary estimate and can be revised when the final UK Services PMI is published.
Why traders watch it
Services account for a large share of UK economic activity, so this early reading can influence expectations for growth, inflation pressures and Bank of England policy.
Market interpretation
- GBP
- A surprise relative to consensus can alter views on UK growth and the likely path of Bank of England policy.
- UK government bonds and interest-rate markets
- The result can affect expectations for future policy rates, especially alongside the manufacturing and composite PMI figures.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A reading above 50 may point to expanding services activity and a reading below 50 to contraction. Results stronger or weaker than market expectations can affect sterling and UK rate expectations, particularly when they alter the perceived momentum of the economy.
A higher reading, particularly one above 50 or above expectations, may be read as evidence of firmer services-sector activity.
A lower reading, particularly one below 50 or below expectations, may be read as evidence of softer services-sector activity.
Above 50 signals expansion from the previous month; below 50 signals contraction.
Typical volatility
High. This is a survey diffusion index rather than a measure of the size of services output. The flash estimate is preliminary, and markets may focus on subcomponents, revisions and the accompanying manufacturing and composite PMI releases.
Trading considerations
- Compare the result with consensus, the prior reading and the 50 expansion-contraction threshold.
- Check the accompanying UK Manufacturing PMI and Composite PMI before drawing conclusions about economy-wide activity.
- Allow for the possibility that the later final services PMI revises the flash estimate.
- Liquidity and spreads can change around the scheduled release time, particularly in sterling pairs and UK rate markets.
