Full explanation

Portugal CPI (YoY) is the annual percentage change in Portugal's national Consumer Price Index (Índice de Preços no Consumidor, IPC), published by Statistics Portugal (INE). It is not seasonally adjusted. It is the national CPI, not the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (IHPC/HICP), which INE publishes alongside and which can differ noticeably. INE publishes a flash estimate (estimativa rápida) at the end of the reference month and the final figure around ten days into the following month; the calendar shows both under this name.

Why traders watch it

Portugal's inflation feeds into the euro-area picture and into domestic wage and pension indexation.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected reading points to stronger price pressure and can lift expectations of tighter monetary policy; a lower reading points the other way.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading means Portuguese consumer prices rose faster over the past year.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading means they rose more slowly.

In line with expectations

Higher means faster Portuguese inflation; lower means slower.

Typical volatility

Low. Flash and final releases share this name. The national IPC and the harmonised IHPC can differ by several tenths of a point; do not compare one with the other.

Trading considerations

  • Distinguish the national IPC from the harmonised IHPC.
  • Compare flash with final.
