Full explanation

Norway Retail Sales Volume measures the monthly percentage change in the seasonally adjusted volume index for Norwegian retail trade, published by Statistics Norway in its Index of wholesale and retail sales (StatBank table 07129). Volume means the quantity of goods sold, with price changes removed using a sales deflator, so it differs from current-price turnover. The retail-trade series covers retail businesses selling to households, including petrol stations; motor-vehicle dealers are classified separately and are outside the retail-trade series.

Why traders watch it

It is a timely read on Norwegian household spending, which can shape expectations for growth and Norges Bank policy.

Market interpretation

Norwegian krone
Can affect Norges Bank expectations when the result differs materially from consensus.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

An Actual figure above Forecast may be read as firmer consumer demand and can support the krone; a figure below Forecast may be read as softer demand. Reactions also depend on revisions and on which industries drove the move.

Stronger than expected

A higher-than-expected result may be read as firmer Norwegian consumer demand, subject to revisions and fuel effects.

Weaker than expected

A lower-than-expected result may be read as softer Norwegian consumer demand, subject to revisions and fuel effects.

In line with expectations

Higher readings suggest firmer spending volumes; lower readings softer, but fuel sales and revisions matter.

Typical volatility

Low. Petrol stations are included, so swings in fuel sales can move the headline figure. This is not a "core" measure and does not share the exclusions used for US, Canadian or UK core retail sales. Some calendars label this release "Core Retail Sales (MoM)"; that label is misleading, but the release dates and values match this official headline volume series.

Trading considerations

  • Compare with the forecast and the revised prior month.
  • Check whether petrol stations or groceries drove the move.
  • Remember this is a volume measure with price effects removed.
