Full explanation

Norway Core CPI-ATE (YoY) is the 12-month percentage change in Statistics Norway's CPI adjusted for tax changes and excluding energy products (CPI-ATE), Norway's main core inflation measure and a key input for Norges Bank. It is not seasonally adjusted. The calendar labels it "Core CPI YTD", but the figure is the change from the same month a year earlier, not a year-to-date change. It is a core measure and is different from headline CPI and from other CPI variants such as CPI-AT or CPI-AE.

Why traders watch it

Norges Bank pays close attention to CPI-ATE when setting interest rates, so surprises can move the krone and rate expectations.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected reading points to stronger underlying inflation and can raise expectations of tighter Norges Bank policy; a lower reading points the other way.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading means underlying Norwegian inflation rose faster.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading means it rose more slowly.

In line with expectations

Higher means firmer core inflation; lower means softer.

Typical volatility

High. Despite the calendar label, this is a 12-month rate, not year-to-date. Do not compare it with headline CPI.

Trading considerations

  • Compare with Norges Bank projections.
  • Remember the calendar label says YTD but the figure is 12-month.
