Mauritius Inflation Rate YoY
Published:
A monthly measure of the change in Mauritius consumer prices from the same month a year earlier.
Full explanation
Mauritius Inflation Rate YoY shows how much consumer prices have changed compared with the same month one year earlier. It is calculated from the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks the prices households pay for a basket of goods and services. Statistics Mauritius releases CPI data monthly and defines the year-on-year rate as the percentage change in the CPI for a given month from that month in the preceding year. This measure captures annual consumer-price inflation at a point in time, rather than Mauritius's separate headline inflation measure based on twelve-month average prices.
Why traders watch it
Traders may use the release to assess inflation conditions in Mauritius and potential implications for local monetary-policy expectations, government-bond yields and the Mauritian rupee.
Market interpretation
- Mauritian rupee (MUR)
- Unexpected inflation readings may affect views on domestic monetary-policy conditions and relative currency returns.
- Mauritius government bonds and interest-rate markets
- The result may influence expectations for inflation, policy rates and yields.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected reading may be interpreted as stronger annual consumer-price pressure, while a lower-than-expected reading may point to softer pressure. Any reaction can also depend on the drivers of price changes, the policy backdrop and whether the result changes expectations for future inflation.
A higher-than-expected year-on-year rate may be viewed as firmer annual inflation pressure, particularly if price increases are broad-based.
A lower-than-expected year-on-year rate may be viewed as softer annual inflation pressure.
Compare the result with expectations, the previous reading and the underlying CPI components rather than viewing the headline percentage in isolation.
Typical volatility
Moderate. The year-on-year rate compares one month with the same month a year earlier, so base effects can materially affect the result. It should not be confused with the headline inflation rate, which Statistics Mauritius measures using average prices over a twelve-month period.
Trading considerations
- Check whether the surprise reflects broad price changes or a small number of volatile components.
- Distinguish the year-on-year CPI change from Mauritius's separate twelve-month-average headline inflation rate.
- Compare the release with recent central-bank communication and other domestic economic indicators.
- Allow for wider spreads or thinner liquidity around scheduled economic releases.
