Japan National Core CPI YoY
Published:
Japan's commonly cited core inflation measure: the annual change in consumer prices excluding fresh food.
Full explanation
Japan National Core CPI YoY measures the annual change in consumer prices across Japan, excluding fresh food. It compares the national Consumer Price Index's "all items, less fresh food" measure with the same month one year earlier. Excluding fresh food is intended to reduce the influence of prices that can be especially volatile from month to month. The Statistics Bureau of Japan publishes the index as part of its monthly CPI release.
Why traders watch it
It is a closely watched measure of Japanese inflation and can influence expectations for Bank of Japan policy, Japanese government bond yields and JPY sentiment.
Market interpretation
- JPY
- A surprise can alter expectations for Bank of Japan policy and relative interest rates.
- Japanese government bonds
- The release can influence views on the inflation outlook and future policy settings.
- Japanese equities
- Sector reactions may vary with implications for rates, household purchasing power and corporate pricing.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A reading above expectations may be interpreted as firmer underlying consumer-price pressure, while a reading below expectations may be interpreted as softer pressure. Market reaction can also depend on the headline CPI, inflation excluding fresh food and energy, wage developments and the Bank of Japan's policy backdrop.
A higher-than-expected annual rate may be seen as evidence of firmer inflation pressure, particularly if it is broad based and supported by related price measures.
A lower-than-expected annual rate may be seen as evidence of softer inflation pressure, particularly if other inflation measures and wage indicators also ease.
Higher-than-expected core CPI may point to firmer inflation pressure; lower-than-expected core CPI may point to softer pressure.
Typical volatility
High. Japan's usual definition of core CPI excludes fresh food, whereas core inflation definitions differ across countries. Base effects, administered-price changes and government energy-support measures can also affect the annual rate.
Trading considerations
- Compare the result with consensus expectations and the prior reading.
- Check headline CPI and the CPI measure excluding both fresh food and energy for breadth and composition.
- Consider base effects, energy subsidies and regulated-price changes when assessing the annual rate.
- Watch for follow-through in Japanese rates and Bank of Japan communication rather than relying only on the initial market reaction.
