Japan Leading Index
Published:
A composite indicator intended to give an early signal of changes in Japan’s business cycle.
Full explanation
Japan’s Leading Index is a composite measure designed to signal changes in economic activity before they become visible in the broader economy. It combines several forward-looking series, such as production, financial and business-related indicators, into one index. The Economic and Social Research Institute of Japan’s Cabinet Office publishes the index as part of its Indexes of Business Conditions. The month-on-month reading shows how the index changed from the previous month.
Why traders watch it
It can provide an early read on whether Japanese economic momentum may be improving or weakening, which can shape expectations for growth, inflation and monetary-policy conditions.
Market interpretation
- JPY
- May affect expectations for Japan’s economic outlook and, indirectly, the expected monetary-policy environment.
- Japanese government bonds
- Can contribute to changing views about future growth and policy conditions, particularly when it confirms other data.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A stronger-than-expected monthly increase may be interpreted as evidence of firmer prospective economic momentum, while a weaker reading or decline may be interpreted as softer momentum. Market reaction can also depend on other Japanese data and the outlook for Bank of Japan policy.
A higher or stronger-than-expected reading may be viewed as a sign that forward-looking economic conditions are improving.
A lower or weaker-than-expected reading may be viewed as a sign that forward-looking economic conditions are softening.
Higher readings can point to firmer prospective momentum, while lower readings can point to softer momentum.
Typical volatility
Moderate. The index is a composite, model-based indicator rather than a direct measure of current output. Component data can be revised, and a single monthly change may not establish a durable economic trend.
Trading considerations
- Compare the result with the consensus expectation and the prior month’s revised value.
- Check whether the move is broad-based across other Japanese activity, production and confidence indicators.
- Consider the release alongside Bank of Japan communications and inflation data.
- Allow for revisions to component series and to the composite index itself.
