Italy Industrial Producer Price Index (PPI) YoY
Published:
A monthly measure of changes in prices received by Italian industrial producers, commonly followed as an indicator of pipeline inflation.
Full explanation
Italy’s Industrial Producer Price Index measures changes in the prices Italian industrial producers receive for goods sold at the factory gate. The year-on-year reading compares the index with the same month one year earlier. Istat publishes the monthly industrial series with domestic and non-domestic market detail; its release also reports separate construction producer-price measures.
Why traders watch it
Traders use it as an upstream inflation indicator for Italy and, by extension, the euro area. It can help shape views on pipeline price pressure, industrial cost conditions and the interest-rate backdrop relevant to EUR assets.
Market interpretation
- EUR
- A surprise can affect expectations for inflation and interest rates, although the response often depends on broader euro-area data and the source of the change.
- European government bonds
- The data may influence inflation and policy-rate expectations at the margin.
- Italian equities
- Sector-level price pressure can be relevant to expectations for industrial-company revenues and margins.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected annual reading may suggest firmer price pressure earlier in the production chain, while a lower-than-expected reading may indicate softer pressure. The reaction can depend on energy prices, the split between domestic and foreign markets, and other inflation releases.
A higher-than-expected reading may be interpreted as firmer upstream price pressure, particularly if increases are broad-based rather than concentrated in volatile components.
A lower-than-expected reading may be interpreted as softer upstream price pressure, though it may also reflect lower energy or commodity prices rather than weaker underlying demand.
Higher readings can point to firmer producer-level price pressure; lower readings can point to softer pressure.
Typical volatility
Moderate. Producer prices are not consumer prices, and movements can be heavily affected by energy and commodity costs. The monthly industrial series may be revised, and the accompanying construction measures are separate indicators.
Trading considerations
- Check whether the move is driven by domestic or non-domestic industrial sales.
- Compare the annual result with the monthly change and recent energy-price movements.
- Account for revisions to previously published monthly industrial PPI data.
- Read the release alongside Italian and euro-area consumer-price data and other industrial indicators.
- Be aware that construction producer-price figures published in the same release are distinct from the industrial PPI.
