Full explanation

Italy CPI NIC (YoY) is the annual percentage change in Istat's consumer price index for the whole nation (indice nazionale dei prezzi al consumo per l'intera collettività, NIC), including tobacco. It is not seasonally adjusted. It is Italy's national CPI, not the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (IPCA/HICP), which Istat publishes alongside and which can differ (for example because of seasonal sales treatment). Istat publishes a preliminary estimate at the end of the reference month and the final figure in the middle of the following month; the calendar shows both under this name.

Why traders watch it

Italy is the third-largest euro-area economy, so its inflation matters for euro-area inflation expectations.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected reading points to stronger price pressure and can lift expectations of tighter monetary policy; a lower reading points the other way.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading means Italian consumer prices rose faster over the past year.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading means they rose more slowly.

In line with expectations

Higher means faster Italian inflation; lower means slower.

medium. Preliminary and final releases share this name. Do not compare the NIC with Italy's HICP, or with the FOI index used for rent indexation.

Trading considerations

  • Distinguish NIC from HICP.
  • Compare preliminary with final.
