Full explanation

Ireland HICP (YoY) is the percentage change in Ireland's Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices compared with the same month a year earlier, published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The HICP uses the common EU methodology used by Eurostat and the ECB, so it is the measure comparable across euro-area countries. It is not seasonally adjusted. It is a different index from Ireland's national CPI, which the CSO publishes in the same release and which, for example, includes mortgage interest. The CSO publishes a flash estimate at the start of the following month and the final figure in the mid-month CPI release; the calendar shows both under this name.

Why traders watch it

Ireland's HICP feeds into the euro-area inflation aggregate.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected reading points to stronger price pressure and can lift expectations of tighter monetary policy; a lower reading points the other way.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading means Irish harmonised consumer prices rose faster.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading means they rose more slowly.

In line with expectations

Higher means faster Irish inflation; lower means slower.
