HCOB Eurozone Composite PMI Final
Published:
A final monthly survey measure of business activity across the euro area’s manufacturing and services sectors.
Full explanation
The HCOB Eurozone Composite PMI Final is a monthly survey-based gauge of business activity across the euro area’s manufacturing and services sectors. It combines manufacturing output and services business activity into one index, where 50 marks no overall change from the prior month; readings above 50 indicate expansion and readings below 50 indicate contraction. S&P Global compiles the survey and weights national and sector results by their economic importance. The final reading updates the earlier flash estimate using a more complete set of survey responses.
Why traders watch it
It provides a timely view of euro-area private-sector momentum before many official activity statistics. Unexpected changes can influence expectations for growth, inflation pressures and European Central Bank policy.
Market interpretation
- EUR foreign-exchange pairs
- Unexpected changes can alter perceptions of euro-area growth and the monetary-policy outlook.
- Euro-area government bonds
- The release can affect expectations for policy rates and the economic outlook.
- European equities
- Sector details and changes in activity expectations can influence views of corporate demand conditions.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A reading above expectations, or a move further above 50, may be interpreted as evidence of firmer private-sector activity. A reading below expectations, or a move further below 50, may be interpreted as weaker activity. The market response can also depend on inflation, employment and new-business details within the report.
A higher-than-expected reading, particularly one above 50, may point to stronger or broadening private-sector activity than anticipated.
A lower-than-expected reading, particularly one below 50, may point to weaker or contracting private-sector activity than anticipated.
50 is the neutral threshold: above 50 signals expansion from the prior month, while below 50 signals contraction.
Typical volatility
Moderate. This is a diffusion index that measures the breadth and direction of month-to-month change, not the level of output. Final readings can differ from the flash estimate, and seasonal-factor updates can affect historical seasonally adjusted series.
Trading considerations
- Compare the final figure with the preceding flash estimate as well as the market consensus.
- Check the manufacturing-output and services-business-activity components rather than relying only on the headline.
- Review new business, employment, prices and business-expectations details for context.
- Allow for potentially wider spreads and fast initial price moves around the scheduled release time.
