Greek Producer Price Index in Industry (YoY)
Published:
A monthly measure of annual changes in prices received by industrial producers in Greece.
Full explanation
The Greek Producer Price Index in Industry measures changes in the prices industrial producers in Greece receive for their output. The year-over-year reading compares the overall index with the same month a year earlier. It covers the combined domestic and non-domestic markets, giving a view of price movements at an earlier stage of the production chain than consumer inflation. ELSTAT publishes the index monthly, with detail by market and industrial grouping.
Why traders watch it
It is an upstream inflation indicator for Greece and can add context to euro-area inflation, industrial conditions and interest-rate expectations relevant to EUR assets.
Market interpretation
- EUR foreign-exchange pairs
- May contribute to views on euro-area inflation and economic conditions, although Greece-specific data are usually one input among many.
- Euro-area government bonds and interest-rate markets
- May be considered as supplementary evidence on pipeline inflation pressures and the policy backdrop.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected annual increase may be consistent with firmer industrial price pressures, while a weaker result may indicate softer pressure. The market response can depend on energy costs, domestic versus export-market movements, the base effect from a year earlier and the wider euro-area inflation picture.
A stronger-than-expected annual PPI increase may suggest firmer industrial price pressure, particularly if the move is broad based rather than confined to energy-related components.
A weaker-than-expected annual PPI reading may suggest softer industrial price pressure, though it can also reflect comparisons with unusually high or low prices a year earlier.
Higher readings can be associated with firmer producer-price pressure; lower readings can be associated with softer pressure, subject to energy effects and base comparisons.
Typical volatility
Moderate. Producer prices do not translate directly or immediately into consumer prices. Large annual moves can reflect energy-price swings, base effects and changes concentrated in particular industrial sectors.
Trading considerations
- Compare the overall reading with domestic and non-domestic market components where available.
- Check whether energy-related sectors are driving the change.
- Consider year-earlier base effects before drawing conclusions from the annual rate.
- Read the result alongside Greek CPI, euro-area inflation releases and other industrial indicators.
- Be aware that liquidity and spreads can change around scheduled economic releases.
