Full explanation

French Consumer Confidence is INSEE's monthly synthetic indicator of household confidence, built from a survey of French households about their past and expected financial situation, their saving capacity, the general economic outlook and whether it is a good time to make major purchases. It is seasonally adjusted and scaled so that its long-run average is 100: readings above 100 mean households are more confident than usual, below 100 less confident. INSEE publishes it near the end of the reference month. It is a French national survey, distinct from the European Commission's euro-area consumer confidence indicator.

Why traders watch it

Household confidence is an early signal for French consumer spending, the largest part of the economy.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A rise points to stronger expected household spending; a fall to weaker. Compare the level with 100 (the long-run average) and with consensus.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading means French households are more confident.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading means they are less confident.

In line with expectations

Above 100 = more confident than the long-run average.

Typical volatility

Low. The reference point is 100, not 0 or 50. Do not compare with euro-area consumer confidence, which is a balance around zero.

Trading considerations

  • Compare with 100 and with the previous month.
