Full explanation

France CPI (YoY) is the annual percentage change in France's national Consumer Price Index (Indice des prix à la consommation, IPC), published by INSEE. It is not seasonally adjusted. It is the national CPI, not the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (IPCH/HICP), which INSEE publishes alongside and which can differ. INSEE publishes a provisional estimate at the end of the reference month and the final figure in the middle of the following month; the calendar shows both under this name, and also lists the final figure as "French CPI NSA (YoY)" — the same unadjusted series.

Why traders watch it

France is the second-largest euro-area economy, so its inflation matters for euro-area inflation and ECB policy expectations.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected reading points to stronger price pressure and can lift expectations of tighter monetary policy; a lower reading points the other way.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading means French consumer prices rose faster over the past year.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading means they rose more slowly.

In line with expectations

Higher means faster French inflation; lower means slower.
