Full explanation

Euro Area Core HICP Inflation Rate measures the annual change in consumer prices across the euro area after excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco. It is intended to show a less volatile view of underlying consumer-price pressures than the headline inflation rate. Eurostat compiles the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices using a common framework across euro-area economies. The year-on-year rate compares prices with the same month one year earlier.

Why traders watch it

It is a closely watched gauge of underlying euro-area inflation that can influence expectations for European Central Bank policy, euro-area government-bond yields and the euro.

Market interpretation

EUR foreign-exchange pairs
Unexpected results can alter expectations for the outlook for ECB policy and interest-rate differentials.
Euro-area government bonds and interest-rate markets
The data can affect expectations for the persistence of inflation and the path of policy rates.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected result may be viewed as evidence of firmer underlying price pressures and may increase attention on less-accommodative ECB policy expectations. A lower-than-expected result may be seen as a sign of softer underlying inflation pressure and may have the opposite effect on those expectations.

Stronger than expected

A higher-than-expected reading may be interpreted as firmer underlying inflation pressure and may draw attention to less-accommodative monetary-policy expectations.

Weaker than expected

A lower-than-expected reading may be interpreted as softer underlying inflation pressure and may reduce attention on less-accommodative monetary-policy expectations.

In line with expectations

Higher-than-expected core inflation may point to firmer underlying price pressure, while a lower reading may point to softer pressure.

Typical volatility

High. This is a flash estimate and can differ from later detailed HICP data. Excluding volatile categories does not make the measure a complete substitute for headline inflation or other measures of domestic price pressure.

Trading considerations

  • Check whether the calendar value is a flash estimate or a later detailed release.
  • Compare the result with headline HICP and the services component rather than assessing it in isolation.
  • Watch for revisions and changes in the euro-area composition or statistical classification.
  • Liquidity and spreads can change around high-profile euro-area inflation releases.
