Euro Area Core HICP (MoM) — Flash Estimate
Published:
A monthly measure of euro-area underlying consumer-price inflation, excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco.
Full explanation
Euro Area Core HICP (MoM) — Flash Estimate measures the monthly change in consumer prices across the euro area after excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco. It is a measure of underlying inflation designed to reduce the effect of components that can be especially volatile. The flash estimate is an early Eurostat estimate for the latest reference month; fuller HICP results are released later and may be revised. The index is harmonised so inflation measures can be compared consistently across EU countries.
Why traders watch it
It is a timely gauge of underlying euro-area inflation that can influence expectations for European Central Bank policy, euro-area bond yields and EUR pricing.
Market interpretation
- EUR
- Unexpected changes can affect expectations for ECB policy and alter demand for the euro.
- Euro-area government bonds and rate markets
- The release can influence expectations for future policy rates and short-dated yields.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A reading above expectations may be interpreted as firmer underlying monthly inflation pressure, while a reading below expectations may be interpreted as softer pressure. Market reactions can also depend on the headline HICP result, annual core inflation, services prices, country-level details and the broader ECB policy outlook.
A higher-than-expected monthly core HICP reading may be viewed as firmer underlying inflation pressure.
A lower-than-expected monthly core HICP reading may be viewed as softer underlying inflation pressure.
Higher readings may suggest firmer underlying inflation pressure, while lower readings may suggest softer pressure.
Typical volatility
High. Monthly inflation rates can be volatile and are sensitive to seasonal patterns, composition effects and rounding. This is a flash estimate, so later HICP releases and revisions can add detail or alter the initial picture.
Trading considerations
- Compare the monthly core reading with the annual core HICP rate and the headline HICP result.
- Treat the flash estimate as an early estimate and monitor the subsequent detailed HICP release for revisions and component data.
- Watch services inflation and major-country results, which can help explain the aggregate reading.
- Liquidity and spreads can change around the scheduled release, particularly in EUR and euro-area rates markets.
