Business Climate Indicator
Published:
A monthly survey-based measure of conditions in euro-area manufacturing.
Full explanation
The Euro Area Business Climate Indicator is a monthly survey-based gauge of conditions in euro-area manufacturing. It summarises manufacturers' views on recent production, total and export order books, finished-goods stocks and expected production. The European Commission builds it from five industry-survey balances to capture their common cyclical signal, so it is designed to move broadly with industrial activity.
Why traders watch it
It is a timely read on manufacturing conditions in the euro area and can influence expectations for regional growth, corporate activity and European Central Bank policy.
Market interpretation
- EUR foreign-exchange pairs
- A surprise can affect assessments of euro-area growth and the policy outlook, particularly when it confirms or challenges other economic releases.
- Euro-area government bonds
- The result can influence expectations for economic momentum and, indirectly, the future inflation and central-bank-policy backdrop.
- European equity markets
- Manufacturing-sensitive companies and sectors may be especially attentive to changes in the indicator.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected reading can be consistent with firmer manufacturing conditions or improving industrial momentum, while a lower reading can be consistent with softer conditions. The response may also depend on the wider survey release and other evidence on euro-area growth and inflation.
A higher reading than expected may indicate that euro-area manufacturers are reporting firmer production, demand or expectations.
A lower reading than expected may indicate softer manufacturing conditions or weaker expectations among firms.
Higher readings may point to firmer euro-area manufacturing sentiment; lower readings may point to softer conditions.
Typical volatility
Moderate. This is a sentiment-based composite indicator rather than a direct measure of factory output. Survey results, seasonal adjustment, country weights and methodological changes can affect comparisons over time.
Trading considerations
- Check whether the result is driven by current production, order books, export orders, stocks or production expectations.
- Compare the release with industrial production, purchasing managers' surveys and broader euro-area sentiment measures.
- Allow for the possibility of revisions, seasonal-adjustment changes and changes in euro-area composition or survey weights.
- Monitor related European Commission survey results released at the same time, as they may provide broader economic context.
