CFTC Euro FX Speculative Net Positions
Published:
A weekly measure of net non-commercial positioning in CME Euro FX futures, derived from the CFTC Commitments of Traders report.
Full explanation
CFTC Euro FX Speculative Net Positions shows whether non-commercial traders hold more long or short Euro FX futures contracts on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. It is commonly calculated as reported non-commercial long positions minus reported non-commercial short positions. The underlying Commitments of Traders data are a weekly snapshot of positions in the regulated futures market, rather than a measure of all euro trading worldwide.
Why traders watch it
Traders use it as a positioning and sentiment gauge for the euro. Large or rapidly changing net positions can help show whether speculative exposure is building, unwinding, or becoming concentrated.
Market interpretation
- EUR/USD and other euro exchange rates
- May shape sentiment around the euro by showing how non-commercial futures positioning has changed.
- Euro FX futures
- Provides context on the balance of reported non-commercial long and short exposure in the CME contract.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher or more positive reading may indicate that non-commercial traders are carrying a larger net-long position in Euro FX futures, while a lower or more negative reading may indicate a larger net-short position. Either outcome can also be interpreted in the context of positioning already held before the report.
A higher reading means non-commercial Euro FX futures positioning is more net long, or less net short, than before.
A lower reading means non-commercial Euro FX futures positioning is more net short, or less net long, than before.
Higher readings indicate more net-long non-commercial Euro FX futures positioning; lower readings indicate more net-short positioning.
Release details
- Release frequency
- Weekly (Tuesday positions, published Friday 3:30 p.m. ET)
Typical volatility
Moderate. This is a lagged weekly futures-position snapshot, not a real-time measure of spot-FX demand. “Speculative” normally refers to the report’s non-commercial category, and the net figure can conceal changes in gross long and short positions or spreading activity.
Trading considerations
- Check the report’s as-of date: Commitments of Traders positions are measured earlier in the week than publication.
- Review gross non-commercial long and short positions as well as the net figure.
- Compare changes in positioning with open interest and subsequent price action.
- Treat the data as futures-market positioning rather than a complete measure of spot, options or over-the-counter euro exposure.
