Canada CPIX (YoY)
Published:
Canada's annual CPI change excluding eight volatile components and indirect-tax effects.
Full explanation
Canada CPIX (YoY) is the annual change in Statistics Canada's Consumer Price Index excluding the eight most volatile components defined by the Bank of Canada (fruit, vegetables, gasoline, fuel oil, natural gas, mortgage interest, inter-city transportation and tobacco) and excluding the effect of changes in indirect taxes on the remaining items. It is published with the monthly CPI release. It is not CPI-trim, CPI-median or CPI excluding food and energy (CPI-XFET), which are separate measures.
Why traders watch it
The result can shape expectations for persistent Canadian inflation and for Bank of Canada policy, which can affect Canadian dollar pricing and Canadian interest-rate markets.
Market interpretation
- CAD foreign-exchange pairs
- Surprises can prompt a reassessment of Canadian inflation and policy-rate expectations.
- Canadian government bonds and interest-rate markets
- The release can affect expectations for the path of Bank of Canada policy.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected reading may be interpreted as a sign that underlying price pressures are firmer, potentially increasing attention on restrictive monetary-policy expectations. A lower-than-expected reading may suggest softer underlying price pressure and could shift attention in the other direction.
A higher-than-expected year-over-year rate may be viewed as evidence of firmer underlying inflation pressure.
A lower-than-expected year-over-year rate may be viewed as evidence of softer underlying inflation pressure.
Higher or lower readings are commonly interpreted in the context of persistence in Canadian inflation and expectations for monetary policy.
Typical volatility
High. Canada has several core-inflation measures, including CPI-trim and CPI-median, so this exclusion-based measure should be assessed alongside the headline CPI release and other core gauges. Base effects, basket changes and revisions can also affect the year-over-year rate.
Trading considerations
- Compare the result with headline CPI and the CPI-trim and CPI-median measures released at the same time.
- Check the monthly change and the annual rate together, as base effects can materially influence year-over-year figures.
- Allow for wider spreads and faster price moves around the scheduled Canadian CPI release.
- Review revisions, methodological notes and the composition of price changes rather than relying on one core measure alone.
