Full explanation

Australia Private Sector Credit YoY is the annual percentage growth in total credit to the private non-financial sector — housing, personal and business credit — published by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in its monthly Financial Aggregates release. It compares the stock of credit with the same month a year earlier and is adjusted for breaks in the series. It measures the same total-credit aggregate as the monthly (MoM) private sector credit figure, but over twelve months rather than one; the two are separate readings and should not be compared with each other directly.

Why traders watch it

Credit growth shows how quickly Australian households and businesses are borrowing, which feeds into spending, housing activity and RBA policy expectations.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

Faster growth than expected points to looser monetary and credit conditions and can support expectations of firmer activity or inflation; slower growth points the other way.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading means Australian private-sector credit grew faster over the past year.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading means credit grew more slowly.

In line with expectations

Higher means faster; lower means slower.
