Atlanta Fed GDPNow
Published:
A frequently updated model estimate of current-quarter US real GDP growth.
Full explanation
Atlanta Fed GDPNow is a model-based running estimate of US real gross domestic product growth for the current quarter. It uses newly released economic data to update an estimate before the US government's official GDP release. The model combines forecasts for GDP components such as consumer spending, investment, trade and inventories using methods designed to resemble the Bureau of Economic Analysis framework. It is a nowcast, not an official forecast or policy view of the Atlanta Federal Reserve.
Why traders watch it
It gives markets a timely read on whether incoming US data may be pointing to faster or slower current-quarter economic growth before the official GDP estimate is published. Material updates can affect expectations for growth, interest rates and the US dollar.
Market interpretation
- US dollar
- Unexpectedly large revisions can influence perceptions of near-term US economic momentum.
- US rates
- Changes in the growth estimate can contribute to shifts in expectations for inflation and monetary policy.
- Equities
- The update can affect the macroeconomic backdrop considered by equity investors, alongside earnings and policy expectations.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected GDPNow estimate may be interpreted as evidence that the available data point to stronger current-quarter US activity, while a lower estimate may be interpreted as evidence of softer activity. The market response can also depend on the data releases that caused the revision and their implications for inflation and monetary policy.
A higher estimate may suggest that the economic data received so far are consistent with faster real GDP growth in the current quarter.
A lower estimate may suggest that the data received so far are consistent with slower real GDP growth in the current quarter.
Higher or lower estimates indicate how the model's reading of current-quarter US growth has changed as new data arrive.
Typical volatility
Moderate. GDPNow is a mechanical model estimate that can change sharply as new source data arrive. It can differ materially from the Bureau of Economic Analysis advance GDP estimate and is not an official forecast by the Atlanta Fed, the Federal Reserve System or the FOMC.
Trading considerations
- Check which underlying economic releases drove the revision rather than focusing only on the headline nowcast.
- Compare the estimate with other timely US activity indicators and with consensus expectations for official GDP.
- Allow for the possibility of substantial differences between GDPNow and the Bureau of Economic Analysis advance GDP estimate.
- Watch for revisions in the underlying source data, which can alter the information set behind the nowcast.
