Economic EventsLow volatility

Full explanation

The U.S. 10-Year TIPS Auction is the U.S. Treasury sale of 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, whose principal is adjusted for changes in the consumer price index. Auctions can be new issues or reopenings of an existing TIPS. The calendar figure is the auction high real yield, in percent: the return above inflation, not the coupon rate. It is distinct from nominal 10-year Treasury notes and from the 30-Year TIPS auction.

Why traders watch it

The real yield shows what investors demand above inflation, and its gap to nominal yields gives a read on inflation expectations.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher real yield than the previous auction signals tighter real financial conditions; a lower one signals easier conditions.

Typical volatility

Low. Real yields are much lower than nominal yields and should not be compared directly with a nominal 10-year note result.
