Philippines Exports YoY
Published:
Philippines Exports YoY measures how the value of goods exported by the Philippines changed compared with the same month a year earlier. It is usually shown as a percentage increase or decrease.
Full explanation
The series is part of the Philippine Statistics Authority's International Merchandise Trade Statistics. It is based on goods leaving the country that are properly cleared through customs, including domestic exports and re-exports, and excludes services exports.
Why traders watch it
Exports are an important signal for external demand, manufacturing activity and foreign-currency earnings. Stronger-than-expected export growth may support views of better growth or external balances, while weaker growth may weigh on sentiment toward PHP, depending on import trends and global risk conditions.
Market interpretation
- PHP
- Can influence expectations for foreign-currency inflows and the trade balance.
- Philippine equities
- Export-sensitive sectors may react to changes in external demand.
- Philippine rates
- Usually indirect, through growth and current-account expectations.
- USD/PHP
- May react when the export surprise meaningfully changes trade-balance expectations.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected YoY rate suggests export sales grew faster, or contracted less, than forecast versus the same month a year earlier. Market reactions depend on base effects, commodity and electronics shipments, revisions, import data and the wider trade-balance picture.
A higher-than-expected reading typically suggests stronger overseas demand or higher export values, which may support growth expectations.
A lower-than-expected reading typically suggests weaker external demand or lower export values, which may weigh on growth expectations.
An in-line reading suggests export conditions are broadly consistent with market expectations.
Typical volatility
Low. Year-over-year rates can be distorted by base effects and one-off shipments. The data are preliminary, subject to revision, and cover merchandise exports only rather than total exports of goods and services.
Trading considerations
- Read exports together with imports and the goods trade balance.
- Check whether electronics or another major commodity group drove the move.
- Watch for preliminary data and later revisions.
- Year-over-year rates can be affected by base effects from the prior year.
