Full explanation

The EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook is a monthly forecast report on near-term energy markets. It brings together projections for energy supply, demand, inventories and prices, covering petroleum and other liquid fuels, natural gas, electricity, coal and renewables in the United States and key global markets. The report also discusses the assumptions behind its outlook, including economic conditions and weather. EIA normally publishes it monthly, although release timing can occasionally change.

Why traders watch it

The report can alter expectations for crude oil, refined products, natural gas and electricity markets. Changes to projected supply, consumption, inventories, production or benchmark energy prices may also feed into inflation expectations and affect energy-linked currencies and interest-rate markets.

Market interpretation

Crude oil and refined products
Revisions to global and U.S. liquid-fuels supply, demand, inventory or price projections can affect expectations for oil and product market balances.
Natural gas
Forecast changes for production, consumption, storage, LNG trade or weather-sensitive demand can influence natural-gas expectations.
FX and rates
Material changes in energy-price assumptions may contribute to shifts in inflation and growth expectations, particularly for energy-producing or energy-importing economies.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

Upward revisions to expected energy demand or downward revisions to supply can be viewed as supportive possibilities for the affected energy market, while the opposite revisions can be viewed as less supportive possibilities. The market response depends on which forecast components changed, how large the revisions were and what had already been priced in.

Typical volatility

Moderate. This is a forecast publication rather than a single economic data point. Its projections depend on assumptions and can be revised in later editions; individual tables and commodities can point in different directions.

Trading considerations

  • Compare revised projections with the prior month's outlook rather than relying only on the report's headline.
  • Separate changes in supply, demand, inventories and price assumptions; they may not convey the same message.
  • Check relevant companion EIA releases and current market conditions for context.
  • Allow for wider spreads and faster price moves around the scheduled publication time in actively traded energy markets.
