UK Balance of Payments, The Pink Book: 2026
ONS publishes its annual Balance of Payments review, covering the current account, financial account and the international investment position, including detailed components such as trade in goods and services and primary/secondary income flows.
The Office for National Statistics has published the annual UK Balance of Payments review, “The Pink Book: 2026”. It covers the cross-border transaction record, including the current account, the financial account and the international investment stock position.
The release is designed to map how the UK earns and pays income with the rest of the world, and how that links to the financial counterpart of those flows. In addition to an overall summary, the publication includes detailed breakdowns for trade in goods and services, and for primary income and secondary income. It also provides detailed annual statistics for the financial account, including direct, portfolio and other investment summaries, as well as reserve assets for central government and financial derivatives.
For FX traders, the value is less in any single figure from the catalogue summary and more in the updated framework it offers for judging external balance and funding structure. Key follow-through is to look at what the Pink Book shows for changes in the current account and how they are financed through the financial account, alongside updates to the international investment position. That combination can shift perceptions of the UK’s external resilience versus vulnerability to global risk conditions.
Why this matters for FX
Balance of payments data informs expectations for the UK’s external funding needs and net investment position, which can affect cross-currency risk premia and the outlook for GBP via terms-of-trade and foreign capital flows. It also provides context for current-account sustainability and the scale/structure of financial flows that can influence UK financial conditions.
