Index of Services, UK: August 2026 time series

Mixed / No clear directional biasMixed signalsOfficialMediumGrowth momentum signal via the services economy (largest GDP component).

ONS released time series for the UK Index of Services for August 2026, showing monthly movements in services industries’ gross value added that make up about 79% of UK GDP.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has published the Index of Services time series for August 2026. The index tracks monthly movements in gross value added for services industries, which together account for around 79% of UK GDP. The release covers several components including distribution, hotels and restaurants; transport, storage and communication; business services and finance; and government and other services.

For FX traders, the practical value of this release is that it helps clarify the direction of UK economic momentum through the services channel. Services inflation pressures often tie back to underlying demand and capacity, so changes in the services growth profile can influence how markets think about the Bank of England’s future stance, even when the data is not itself an inflation print.

The next step for traders is to watch how the August index relates to broader UK growth measures published alongside it, and whether subsequent service-industry readings confirm a pick-up or suggest renewed slowdown. The ONS also provides an updated timetable, with the next release due on 12 November 2026.

Why this matters for FX

Because services are the largest part of UK activity, the Index of Services provides near real-time information on whether UK domestic demand and activity momentum are improving or weakening. For FX, that feeds into growth expectations and therefore the expected path of Bank of England policy, especially when markets are sensitive to whether inflation is being underpinned by domestic activity.
