BEA: US GDP (Advance Estimate), 3rd Quarter 2026

Real GDP rose at a 3.4% annual rate in Q3 2026, up from 2.2% in Q2. The gain reflected higher investment, consumer spending and government spending, partly offset by lower exports, with imports rising.

The US Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that real GDP increased at a 3.4% annual rate in the third quarter of 2026, compared with 2.2% in the second quarter. BEA attributes the acceleration primarily to faster investment, an increase in consumer spending, and an upturn in government spending, while exports fell. Imports rose more in Q3 than in Q2, which acted as a drag given their subtraction in the GDP calculation.

BEA also highlighted that real final sales to private domestic purchasers increased 4.9% in Q3 versus 4.6% in Q2. That measure focuses on domestic demand, which matters for assessing whether growth is being sustained by consumption and investment rather than net trade.

On inflation, the gross domestic purchases price index rose 3.0% in the third quarter, down from 5.6% in the second quarter. BEA said the PCE price index increased 2.1%, compared with 5.0% in Q2, and that PCE inflation excluding food and energy increased 2.5%, versus 3.3% previously.

Traders will watch the second estimate for more detail and BEA’s “Corporate Profits” release due with it on November 25, 2026, as well as how later data confirm the apparent shift in the balance between domestic demand and external trade.

Why this matters for FX

This GDP release is a key input to US growth and demand expectations, which in turn feed interest-rate expectations and the USD’s direction of travel. BEA also provides the GDP price measures and PCE price index figures, relevant for inflation expectations and how markets may think about the path of monetary policy.
