FOMC Statement
Published:
The Federal Reserve's post-meeting announcement of its monetary-policy decision and reasoning.
Full explanation
The FOMC Statement is the Federal Reserve's formal announcement at the end of a monetary-policy meeting. It sets out the Committee's policy decision, including any change to the federal funds rate target, and explains its assessment of inflation, employment, growth, and risks. It can also communicate changes to balance-sheet policy and show whether any members dissented from the decision.
Why traders watch it
It is a primary source of information on US monetary policy, which can affect expectations for interest rates, US Treasury yields, the US dollar, and broader risk markets.
Market interpretation
- US dollar and major FX pairs
- May affect relative interest-rate expectations and short-term volatility.
- US Treasury yields and interest-rate futures
- May prompt repricing of the expected path for US policy rates.
- Equities and other risk-sensitive markets
- May influence financial-conditions expectations and risk sentiment.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A decision or wording seen as more restrictive than expected may lead markets to reassess the likely path of US interest rates; a more accommodative-than-expected outcome may prompt the opposite reassessment. The market response can also depend on the vote, balance-sheet language, and how the statement compares with prior guidance.
Typical volatility
Very High. The statement is qualitative as well as policy-specific, so reactions may be shaped by what markets had already priced in. On meetings with forecasts or a press conference, those accompanying materials can materially affect interpretation.
Trading considerations
- Compare the policy decision and statement wording with prevailing market expectations, not only with the previous meeting's statement.
- Check whether the meeting includes the Summary of Economic Projections and a press conference, as these can add important context.
- Watch for revisions to the assessment of inflation, employment, growth, risks, and the balance-sheet stance.
- Expect liquidity conditions and spreads to change around the scheduled release time, especially in USD pairs and US rate markets.
