FOMC Press Conference
Published:
A Federal Reserve news conference following a scheduled FOMC policy meeting.
Full explanation
The FOMC Press Conference is a news conference held after scheduled meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee, the Federal Reserve body responsible for U.S. monetary policy. It gives the Fed Chair an opportunity to explain the policy decision, the Committee's assessment of inflation and employment, and the outlook behind that decision. Questions from reporters can add detail or nuance beyond the accompanying policy statement. It is normally scheduled shortly after the decision announcement on the second day of an FOMC meeting.
Why traders watch it
USD, U.S. Treasury yields and risk-sensitive markets can react to changes in how participants interpret the Fed's policy outlook, economic assessment and balance of risks.
Market interpretation
- USD
- May move as investors reassess the expected path of U.S. interest rates.
- U.S. Treasury yields
- May adjust as the remarks affect expectations for policy rates and the economic outlook.
- Global risk-sensitive assets
- May see increased volatility as financial-conditions expectations are repriced.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
Market reactions may depend on whether the remarks are interpreted as more restrictive or more supportive of future policy than expectations. The questions and answers can be as important as the prepared opening remarks because they may clarify the meaning of the policy statement or projections.
Typical volatility
Very High. This is a communication event rather than a numerical economic indicator. Its effect can depend on the policy decision, the accompanying statement and projections, prior market positioning, and whether remarks alter expectations for the future path of policy.
Trading considerations
- Read the policy statement and, when published, the Summary of Economic Projections alongside the press conference.
- Expect rapid repricing and potentially wider spreads around the start of the conference and during the question-and-answer session.
- Distinguish prepared remarks from unscripted answers, which may prompt a separate market reaction.
- Compare the communication with market expectations immediately before the meeting rather than considering comments in isolation.
