ECB Economic Bulletin
Published:
A regular European Central Bank publication explaining the economic and monetary analysis behind its policy decisions.
Full explanation
The ECB Economic Bulletin is a regular publication explaining economic and monetary conditions in the euro area. It provides the analysis that informs the European Central Bank Governing Council's monetary policy decisions. The bulletin covers topics such as inflation, growth, financial conditions and international developments; the March, June, September and December editions also discuss staff macroeconomic projections. It is published eight times a year, generally two weeks after a monetary policy meeting.
Why traders watch it
It can add context to the ECB's assessment of inflation, growth and financial conditions, which may shape expectations for future euro-area monetary policy.
Market interpretation
- EUR foreign-exchange pairs
- The tone and emphasis of the ECB's analysis can affect expectations for future euro-area monetary policy.
- Euro-area government bonds and interest-rate markets
- Discussion of inflation, growth and financial conditions can influence views on the path of ECB policy rates.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
There is no single headline number to classify as stronger or weaker than expected. Markets may focus on whether the bulletin's analysis appears more concerned about inflation or more concerned about weak activity and downside risks.
Typical volatility
Moderate. The bulletin is an analytical publication rather than a new high-frequency data release. Its market relevance depends on whether it adds meaningful information beyond recent ECB decisions, speeches, projections and economic data.
Trading considerations
- Compare the bulletin's language with the most recent ECB policy statement and press conference.
- Check whether the publication includes updated staff macroeconomic projections.
- Consider recent euro-area inflation, activity and labour-market releases when assessing the bulletin's emphasis.
- Allow for wider spreads or short-term repricing if the publication changes expectations about the policy outlook.
